Learning the Chinese Alphabet

Learners have to be keen observers when it comes to the Chinese
alphabet. There are a number of things to remember to be able to use and
understand the Chinese alphabet. It is a rich system which requires a
great deal of skills from learners. This is not one system to be easily
grasped and understood. The mere number of the Chinese alphabet already
poses a problem to learners and users of the language.
The Chinese alphabet, like most alphabets systems, uses symbols based
on phonetic systems wherein individual letters have corresponding
sounds. The letters have to be combined in a certain way in order for
them to have meaning. The individual letters do not contain or carry
meaning by themselves. There has to be a certain arrangement or
permutation of letters for an individual to extract meaning from these
letters. Using the arrangement of letter, one can generate sounds and
meanings to communicate thoughts and ideas. The written symbol
represents a concept which can be transferred in the written or spoken
form. The Chinese alphabet is very much like the English alphabet in
such a way that the two systems use phonetic values of letters and their
finite combinations to make meaning.

The Chinese alphabet took from the English system letters and symbols to
create meaning. Although the system of arrangement is a little different
in the Chinese system, both systems still use letters to generate sound
and meaning. The letters put side by side have to read or vocalized for
meaning to be possible. There are, of course, only a predetermined and
fixed number of possible combinations, which users may employ in their
writing.
However, unlike the English alphabet the Chinese alphabet is probably
one of the existing alphabets in the world that has the most number of
symbols in use. The total number of letters and symbols in the Chinese
writing system is overwhelming. One has to be familiarized with all the
available symbols in order to fair well in reading. The Chinese alphabet
reaches several thousands in number. It would definitely be a challenge
for new users to learn the alphabet and the language of the Chinese
people. Mastery of the rich Chinese alphabet is not an easy task. It is
an undertaking for the persistent and diligent. The learner’s mind is
required to take note and memorize several hundreds and thousands of
letters and symbols in the Chinese alphabet in order to be competent
enough to use it.Understanding and finding the meaning in Chinese
alphabet are ways to make learning possible and efficient. Most of the
Chinese symbols have similarities. It is hard enough to instill them in
memory that is probably the reason why many of Chinese learners often
find it difficult to learn Chinese. To add to the abundance of letters
to remember, there are several ones looking highly similar and thus the
process of learning and memorization is taken to a more difficult level.
In simpler terms, the Chinese alphabet is indeed a very complex thing. |
